Narrative:

As usual midway was very congested had been closed for fog earlier. While we were being vectored to final there were a lot of speed restrictions, the last of which was to hold 170 KTS to the marker and call tower. The first officer was flying at the time. The combination of maintaining and abnormally high speed until late in the approach and the aircraft being very heavy resulted in our having considerable trouble slowing the aircraft down for landing. We were occupied with this and monitoring the approach and deciding to land or go around and forgot to check in with tower for landing clearance. After taxiing off the runway I realized our error and advised ground, who said that it was 'no problem'; we heard no more ot it. This was a classic case of letting the controller 'fly' the aircraft to a point that backed us into a corner that almost required a go around and did result in a rather fast T/D with more than regular braking. We talked about it over dinner and both learned, or relearned a valuable lesson.

Title: ACR MLG LANDS WITHOUT CLRNC AT MDW.

Narrative: AS USUAL MIDWAY WAS VERY CONGESTED HAD BEEN CLOSED FOR FOG EARLIER. WHILE WE WERE BEING VECTORED TO FINAL THERE WERE A LOT OF SPD RESTRICTIONS, THE LAST OF WHICH WAS TO HOLD 170 KTS TO THE MARKER AND CALL TWR. THE F/O WAS FLYING AT THE TIME. THE COMBINATION OF MAINTAINING AND ABNORMALLY HIGH SPD UNTIL LATE IN THE APCH AND THE ACFT BEING VERY HEAVY RESULTED IN OUR HAVING CONSIDERABLE TROUBLE SLOWING THE ACFT DOWN FOR LNDG. WE WERE OCCUPIED WITH THIS AND MONITORING THE APCH AND DECIDING TO LAND OR GO AROUND AND FORGOT TO CHK IN WITH TWR FOR LNDG CLRNC. AFTER TAXIING OFF THE RWY I REALIZED OUR ERROR AND ADVISED GND, WHO SAID THAT IT WAS 'NO PROB'; WE HEARD NO MORE OT IT. THIS WAS A CLASSIC CASE OF LETTING THE CTLR 'FLY' THE ACFT TO A POINT THAT BACKED US INTO A CORNER THAT ALMOST REQUIRED A GO AROUND AND DID RESULT IN A RATHER FAST T/D WITH MORE THAN REGULAR BRAKING. WE TALKED ABOUT IT OVER DINNER AND BOTH LEARNED, OR RELEARNED A VALUABLE LESSON.
