Narrative:

As we were landing on runway 28 another aircraft announced 'cardinal almost descended on us - going around'. Identified [themselves] as [a cessna 172] which we had heard announcing 'turning base' as we were about mid downwind. We had entered the pattern from the southwest on a 45. We had announced on the 45; downwind; base and final. Abeam the runway 28 numbers we saw a cessna on short final; which we assumed to be [the other cessna]. My passenger; also a certified pilot; had noted that the aircraft ahead of us on a higher downwind had disappeared into the clear sky and we did not see it after that. Also; there is a lot of visual ground clutter around S39. After landing; we saw a different cessna on the taxiway; having just landed. We never did see [the other cessna] after its disappearance on our downwind. We did not see it during our base turn or at the claimed near miss point. We might conclude [the other cessna] had used an extended pattern for us to arrive at touchdown simultaneously. We doubt speed differences were involved as we were under 90 knots on all pattern legs. There may have been missed/doubled radio calls as we did not realize or see he was on final. I have our GPS track data with altitude and times if this would help to explain what happened. We have not discussed these details with the other pilot as he was abusive on the radio after the event.
