Narrative:

Reporting into ZSE on frequency 119.65, I was instructed to climb to FL230. I then read back the climb clearance and received an acknowledgement from center. I was suspicious that a wrong altitude had been assigned and talked it over with the copilot. Passing through FL198 I was given a frequency change to ZSE on 126.6, but before switching over to the new frequency I asked the controller to confirm my climb to FL230. He replied that I was cleared to FL200 only. I then immediately stopped the climb, reaching a maximum altitude of FL208, and began a descent to FL200. I then contacted ZSE on frequency 126.6. While the altitude incursion was happening, no traffic conflict was observed or reported by ZSE. Later I initiated a call to the ZSE supervisor to inquire about the incident. He informed me that no traffic conflict occurred, but recommended that I submit a NASA form.

Title: ACR RECEIVES CLRNC TO FL230. READBACK ACKNOWLEDGED. AT HANDOFF REQUESTS CONFIRMATION OF ALT AND IS TOLD FL200.

Narrative: RPTING INTO ZSE ON FREQ 119.65, I WAS INSTRUCTED TO CLB TO FL230. I THEN READ BACK THE CLB CLRNC AND RECEIVED AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FROM CENTER. I WAS SUSPICIOUS THAT A WRONG ALT HAD BEEN ASSIGNED AND TALKED IT OVER WITH THE COPLT. PASSING THROUGH FL198 I WAS GIVEN A FREQ CHANGE TO ZSE ON 126.6, BUT BEFORE SWITCHING OVER TO THE NEW FREQ I ASKED THE CTLR TO CONFIRM MY CLB TO FL230. HE REPLIED THAT I WAS CLRED TO FL200 ONLY. I THEN IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE CLB, REACHING A MAX ALT OF FL208, AND BEGAN A DSCNT TO FL200. I THEN CONTACTED ZSE ON FREQ 126.6. WHILE THE ALT INCURSION WAS HAPPENING, NO TFC CONFLICT WAS OBSERVED OR RPTED BY ZSE. LATER I INITIATED A CALL TO THE ZSE SUPVR TO INQUIRE ABOUT THE INCIDENT. HE INFORMED ME THAT NO TFC CONFLICT OCCURRED, BUT RECOMMENDED THAT I SUBMIT A NASA FORM.
