Narrative:

After returning to the gate to resolve a maintenance issue and adding fuel; ground metering informed us that we need to re log on to controller pilot data link communication (cpdlc) to get and accept our amended clearance. We logged on and the new clearance was received. We read it and it appeared that a change in the routing was after takeoff direct amakr. We discussed this; then used the load to FMC prompt and it did take out the GNNRR2 departure amakr transition. It seemed odd but we accepted the clearance using cpdlc. Taxi out to the runway was normal. After being cleared for takeoff; we began our takeoff roll. At approximately 800 above field elevation we began a right turn towards amakr. Departure control stated at this time we should be flying the GNNRR2 departure and gave us a 270 heading. We were in VMC conditions and complied immediately. We were asked about the clearance deviation and we explained what we had thought our clearance was. We were asked to call the departure supervisor to see what had happened.

Original NASA ASRS Text

Title: Wide body air carrier Flight Crew reported receiving an amended clearance via Controller Pilot Data Link Communications. It appeared to the crew that the GNNRR2 had been replaced by direct to AMAKR after takeoff and that was loaded in the FMC. After takeoff when the crew turned toward AMAKR; ATC advised that they should be flying the GNNRR2 with the AMAKR transition; i.e. via STINS.
