Narrative:

After crossing runway 4L at K; ground gave us the instructions of 'K; south; join a.' after reviewing the chart and also the airport signage in front of us; we executed what we thought were in fact the right taxi instructions. Ground then brought to our attention that we took K to a. After making this mistake; ground mentioned that this happens all the time due to the poor signage in that area. We continued a to the ramp. [Recommend] better signage at ewr.
