Narrative:

I was pilot flying; and center gave us instructions to hold on the arrival into ZZZ. They also told us to cross zzzzz intersection at 18000 ft; and since we were descending and still above 30000ft; I noticed our current descent rate was not enough to allow us to reach 18000 ft by the time we reached zzzzz intersection. I increased our descent rate in V/south mode with idle thrust until the airspeed (at 300 kts IAS) started increasing still with an insufficient descent rate. In order to descend faster I reached for and pulled the flight spoilers lever and I must have pulled it too quickly because as soon as I pulled the lever we felt the aircraft rock and two caution messages appeared on ED1 (electronic display 1). The messages were ib flight spoilers and ib spoilerons. We looked at the flight control synoptic page and verified the ib flight spoilers and spoilerons had failed. Due to the fact this was a flight control failure; we [advised ATC] and received instructions from ATC to disregard the holding instructions and continue on the arrival. I took the radios and the captain ran the QRH; then sent an ACARS message to dispatch and maintenance letting them know what had happened. He then called the flight attendants letting them know what had happened and made a PA to the passengers. ATC asked us if we would need further assistance on the ground; and we said no. ATC advised us that ZZZ would be rolling the firetrucks to meet us as a precaution. Once I turned inbound on the ILS approach; I disconnected the autopilot to familiarize myself with any degradation of control; of which there appeared to be none. We continued the approach and landed safely with no other assistance required. Maintenance sent us an ACARS telling us there was a reset procedure in the QRH for the two caution messages we received; and once we reached the gate we performed the reset procedure and got the two caution messages to extinguish. Maintenance personnel met us at the gate. In the future when I deploy the flight spoilers I will do so more slowly and smoothly; as this seemed to have caused the failure.

Title: CRJ-900 First Officer reported receiving IB FLT SPOILERS and IB SPOILERONS caution messages after deploying the flight spoilers in descent.

Narrative: I was pilot flying; and Center gave us instructions to hold on the Arrival into ZZZ. I increased our descent rate in V/S mode with idle thrust until the airspeed (at 300 kts IAS) started increasing still with an insufficient descent rate. In order to descend faster I reached for and pulled the Flight Spoilers lever and I must have pulled it too quickly because as soon as I pulled the lever we felt the aircraft rock and two CAUTION messages appeared on ED1 (Electronic Display 1).
