Narrative:

Smoky day; visibility 3 miles. Aircraft X reported inbound 15 miles northeast of boise for runway 10R. I cleared aircraft X to land runway 10R. I was busy talking with fellow controllers and aircraft X was the only aircraft I was talking to. I didn't write down the call sign on my scratchpad. 8 minutes later aircraft Y called ready for departure runway 10R. I scanned the radar and my pad and the runway. I totally forgot about aircraft X and didn't see him short final due to the smoke around the airport. I cleared aircraft Y for takeoff. I heard 'cancel that' over frequency. I said 'say again' and aircraft X said he was short final landing runway 10R. I immediately canceled aircraft Y takeoff clearance. Fortunately he was still holding short of the runway and didn't move. No separation lost. Humbling experience. Scared me very bad today and ruined my day. I will be more proactive on writing down all arrivals on my scratchpad and make sure I don't cut corners. Thanks to aircraft X for being vigilant and seeing the whole picture. He was able to stop an issue that could've been very bad. It's a team concept also to include pilots. I had him call me on the phone after he landed and thanked him for calling me out on my mistake.
