Narrative:

We were arriving at ZZZ; watching the radar; and noticed the rain showers were building. Dispatch sent a diversion update to ZZZ1 that I accepted. Approach control vectored us off the STAR and towards zzzzz intersection on the localizer approach and cleared us to a lower altitude and asked us to expedite the descent. That put us high; approximately 14;000 feet MSL at about 20 NM out from the field. The first officer (first officer) immediately slowed the aircraft and we lowered the gear to get down quickly. We quickly discussed what we thought approach control's plan was; for us; relative to the approach. At about 6000 feet MSL the approach controller notified us about moderate to heavy rain at a 7 to 4 NM final with some wind shears on the airfield. He asked what we wanted to do. At this time we had been cleared to 3000 feet MSL and were approaching final just outside of zzzzz intersection. I requested we get vectored off the approach into a box pattern. While in the descent; the first officer had slowed the aircraft and we had configured to flaps 5 in addition to the gear being down. Somewhere in the descent he had turned off the auto throttles and I didn't know it or it didn't register with me because of my distractions conversing with approach control; looking at the radar; keeping track of the fuel and watching our descent.very quickly; after we reached 3000 feet MSL; while I was crosschecking the radar with what I was seeing outside; to coordinate a plan with approach controller; the first officer and I noticed our very low airspeed. We were approaching a stall situation. The first officer immediately added power to reverse the deceleration. The lowest speed I saw was 129 knots and I never heard or felt a buffet or stick shaker. Once we were accelerating; at a safe speed; the first officer requested 'gear up' and then we continued until we were at a clean configuration at up speed. Nothing unusual or noteworthy occurred after we made the recovery. We coordinated with the approach controller; flew around the weather to the east and south then did an approach to runway xy.
