Narrative:

During climb out from abq; did some weather deviating. Leveled off at assigned and filed altitude of FL280. Weather still an issue. We decided we wanted to climb. I asked for FL320. Received clearance. Read back 'vacating FL280 for FL320'. Entered 320 into the FMC; pilot flying commenced climb. Passing through FL300; controller asked us why we weren't at FL280 and it was pretty clear that she wanted us to go back to FL280. I told her that 'you cleared us to FL320' and that we would go back to FL280. We returned to FL280. We had no obvious traffic conflict. We remain convinced that we were in fact cleared to FL320.
