Narrative:

While doing touch & go's in the traffic pattern; the tower told us we were to follow the cessna 172. Once the cessna 172 passed our wing tip we turned from downwind to base. The tower called us and asked if we were on downwind and we said negative we were turning downwind to base. At this point the tower realized that we did not see a second cessna 172 in the pattern with us and had us turn crosswind then back to downwind. We gained altitude to increase the distance between the second cessna 172 and our da-40. We were then cleared to land on the parallel runway and did so without any incident.I asked each person that was in the plane (3 pilots total) if any of them heard the tower tell us we were number three behind two other cessna 172s. The other two pilots heard what I heard and that was we were to follow the cessna 172 that was on final and not the second cessna 172 that was on a 2 mile final.
