Narrative:

Took off from a private field on a training flight. Contacted approach and kept in radio communication during maneuvers in practice area. I contacted lnk approach and informed them I wanted to depart practice area and continue inbound for touch and goes at lnk municipal. They acknowledged and gave us instructions to set up for a right base for 35R. Lnk approach then handed us off to lnk tower. On our initial contact we said 'lnk tower small aircraft with you.' they acknowledged and cleared us to land on 35R. We landed and took off again for a series of touch and goes. Controller chastised us for not informing him that we wanted touch and goes. I told him we informed approach that we wanted touch and goes and assumed this information would be handed off to the tower. Upon reflecting back on the situation I should have informed lnk tower on initial contact of my intentions to do touch and goes. Also should have said we wanted touch and goes when he cleared us to land instead of clearing us for touch and goes. I never should have assumed approach would have told the tower what we wanted or intended to do. There were no other aircraft in the pattern at the time of our misunderstanding or this could have been a real problem. This is one flight where the instructor learned as much as the student.

I NEVER SHOULD HAVE ASSUMED APCH WOULD HAVE TOLD THE TWR WHAT WE WANTED OR INTENDED TO DO. THERE WERE NO OTHER ACFT IN THE PATTERN AT THE TIME OF OUR MISUNDERSTANDING OR THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A REAL PROBLEM. THIS IS ONE FLT WHERE THE INSTRUCTOR LEARNED AS MUCH AS THE STUDENT.
