Narrative:

During taxi to the runway; the captain's chair back gave way and would not return to the upright position. Tower was contacted and we requested a return to the gate; no assistance required. Upon returning to the gate the aircraft was written up and [maintenance] was called; we were swapped into another aircraft and left 30 minutes after returning to the gate.
