Encountered severe turbulence at FL190-220. 90 degree bank angles noted. ATC specifically mentioned greater than 300 feet deviations in either direction. Control of the aircraft was barely possible; items thrown around the cockpit. A box was up-ended and debris scattered throughout the airplane. No personal injury noted. No obvious damage to the aircraft was noted. Weather conditions worsened after departure with convection noted south of the area. No previous reports of turbulence to ATC more severe than moderate turbulence.
