Narrative:

Had been assigned 13000' eastbound, but cloud tops began to rise. Asked for higher altitude to remain out of cloud (OAT was 0 degrees C). Lax controller asked me to request next controller (yuma approach). Entered cloud top and windshield immediately and completely iced over. Could not see if clouds were topped due to windshield and side window ice. Left assigned altitude immediately west/O further request for clearance. Climbed quickly to 15000', clearing cloud tops. Icing immediately shed and only small amount seen on wings when windows cleared. Lax controller noted my altitude bust by radio and cleared me for that altitude. I know of no traffic conflict or deviation by other traffic because of my action.

Title: UPON ENCOUNTERING SIGNIFICANT ICING CONDITIONS, SMT PLT ON IFR PLAN CLIMBS WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION.

Narrative: HAD BEEN ASSIGNED 13000' EBND, BUT CLOUD TOPS BEGAN TO RISE. ASKED FOR HIGHER ALT TO REMAIN OUT OF CLOUD (OAT WAS 0 DEGS C). LAX CTLR ASKED ME TO REQUEST NEXT CTLR (YUMA APCH). ENTERED CLOUD TOP AND WINDSHIELD IMMEDIATELY AND COMPLETELY ICED OVER. COULD NOT SEE IF CLOUDS WERE TOPPED DUE TO WINDSHIELD AND SIDE WINDOW ICE. LEFT ASSIGNED ALT IMMEDIATELY W/O FURTHER REQUEST FOR CLRNC. CLBED QUICKLY TO 15000', CLRING CLOUD TOPS. ICING IMMEDIATELY SHED AND ONLY SMALL AMOUNT SEEN ON WINGS WHEN WINDOWS CLRED. LAX CTLR NOTED MY ALT BUST BY RADIO AND CLRED ME FOR THAT ALT. I KNOW OF NO TFC CONFLICT OR DEVIATION BY OTHER TFC BECAUSE OF MY ACTION.
