Narrative:

My first officer was flying the dades A9 arrival for tpa, but when it came time to intercept the pie 219 degree right inbound from the gnv 174 degree right, he just kept going straight. I thought maybe tpa approach had given us a heading I was unaware of. I asked the first officer and he said no, but that he figured as though that's what approach would want. I couldn't believe that he (the first officer) would actually think such a thing--so I told him to start his turn and intercept the pie 219 degree right inbound (039 degree right), and I also called approach to see if it would be ok if we missed the turn by a little bit. I think they were a little surprised by it all, but they did accommodate us and just gave us a new heading. I don't think there was a traffic conflict as a result of it, or we probably would have been so informed. As it was, the first officer and I had a real serious talk when we got on the ground; i.e., follow your clearance, don't invent your own!!!!

Title: FO FLYING DELIBERATELY FLEW BEYOND THE RADIAL HE WAS SUPPOSED TO INTERCEPT ON THE DADES 9 ARR.

Narrative: MY F/O WAS FLYING THE DADES A9 ARR FOR TPA, BUT WHEN IT CAME TIME TO INTERCEPT THE PIE 219 DEG R INBND FROM THE GNV 174 DEG R, HE JUST KEPT GOING STRAIGHT. I THOUGHT MAYBE TPA APCH HAD GIVEN US A HDG I WAS UNAWARE OF. I ASKED THE F/O AND HE SAID NO, BUT THAT HE FIGURED AS THOUGH THAT'S WHAT APCH WOULD WANT. I COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT HE (THE F/O) WOULD ACTUALLY THINK SUCH A THING--SO I TOLD HIM TO START HIS TURN AND INTERCEPT THE PIE 219 DEG R INBND (039 DEG R), AND I ALSO CALLED APCH TO SEE IF IT WOULD BE OK IF WE MISSED THE TURN BY A LITTLE BIT. I THINK THEY WERE A LITTLE SURPRISED BY IT ALL, BUT THEY DID ACCOMMODATE US AND JUST GAVE US A NEW HDG. I DON'T THINK THERE WAS A TFC CONFLICT AS A RESULT OF IT, OR WE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN SO INFORMED. AS IT WAS, THE F/O AND I HAD A REAL SERIOUS TALK WHEN WE GOT ON THE GND; I.E., FOLLOW YOUR CLRNC, DON'T INVENT YOUR OWN!!!!
