Narrative:

Departed VFR from an uncontrolled airport in VFR conditions. The uncontrolled airport lies at the edge of the IFR approach controled airspace of another airport. I was later told that a VFR departure was not legal, even though the conditions were VFR, if the valley airport was reporting IFR conditions. I should have had a better understanding of the rules governing this flight situation.
