Narrative:

Reporter is a new pilot with no previous canyon flying experience and had not been warned during training about analyzing a canyon prior to entry. Reporter described the climbing maneuver used in an attempt to exit the rising terrain; and how he had no airspeed left for the last 20-30 feet prior to the rim. He instead stalled a few feet above a snow covered sloped field and was able to walk out of the situation. The only damage during landing was a bent propeller blade. However; the fuselage was damaged during the attempted recovery with a helicopter and sling.
