Narrative:

A management company called me and asked if I could do this trip. I had never met this person; so I didn't have much info about the operator. I am between jobs so I took the trip. I was told the first officer; who had very limited experience; knew the FMS very well. After departure I found that the first officer's experience was in fact low on the FMS. He was told I was experienced on this 'wal-mart' FMS. We were both lied to. The ipad the operator had given me only had 23% [charge]. I had been told all crew members had an ipad with charts. As it turned out; the first officer only had his personal phone with 'foreflight.' while on the descent into phx on the 'PINNG1 arrival' the ipad's battery became depleted. The first officer had neglected to enter the full route into the FMS. After I brought that to his attention; he proceeded to enter the waypoints. I had to manually fly the arrival because I had no VNAV info except for a vertical speed readout. I had my hands full flying and trying to help the young first officer plug in the rest of the arrival. Either he missed entering 'vistl'; or the FMS was off course; the final controller said we were 2 miles south of course and gave us a heading.there was never any traffic conflict during this. It was clear with great visibility. We were on the downwind leg and called the airport in sight. I asked the tower to relay a 'thank you' back to the 'final controller' for me.I have been in this industry now for [many] years. I can say this was the most screwed up management company I have ever seen. I had to deal with substandard equipment and a management company whose manager had the worst ego I have ever seen. I made the conscientious decision to cancel the rest of the trip.I was the 3rd or 4th pilot to walk in a week. The owner of the aircraft has since cancelled the management of his aircraft and moved it to another airport.I have a very clean record and will not let some substandard 'management company' dictate my future career outcome. Because I needed the trip for income; I let this cloud my good judgement and hurt my professional character as an airman. I will never accept a trip from this type of operator again.
