Narrative:

We were late getting in to mem and had to change planes for flight to ewr and had little time to get out on schedule (which of course is the big thing these days). Per SOP first officer checked weight tab and computer maximum weights and selected flap setting. At some point I questioned flap setting and first officer again checked and confirmed it (this is where I should have checked figures myself). WX at mem was clear and I was more concerned paperwise about conditions at ewr. With very little delay we were cleared for takeoff. This runway was closed for last 1500' (18L) and though we did not infringe on this area the takeoff roll was lower than I felt comfortable with. After takeoff I finally checked numbers myself (too late) and sure enough we were too heavy for that runway. This was a 'no excuse sir' event but some human factors were: 1) rushed turnaround, 2) lack of attention to ficons at mem, more concerned with destination and lulled by good, cool WX at mem, 3) too much reliance on accuracy of first officer, 4) too many personal distractions piled up as result of dissatisfaction with job, recent merger, minor physical discomforts, etc. In conclusion, have decided I better get my act together and put everything out of mind but the task at hand, or hang it up for good.

Title: FLT CREW OF MLG TOOK OFF ON RWY WITH DISPLACED THRESHOLD OVERWEIGHT FOR SHORTENED RWY.

Narrative: WE WERE LATE GETTING IN TO MEM AND HAD TO CHANGE PLANES FOR FLT TO EWR AND HAD LITTLE TIME TO GET OUT ON SCHEDULE (WHICH OF COURSE IS THE BIG THING THESE DAYS). PER SOP F/O CHECKED WEIGHT TAB AND COMPUTER MAX WEIGHTS AND SELECTED FLAP SETTING. AT SOME POINT I QUESTIONED FLAP SETTING AND F/O AGAIN CHECKED AND CONFIRMED IT (THIS IS WHERE I SHOULD HAVE CHECKED FIGURES MYSELF). WX AT MEM WAS CLEAR AND I WAS MORE CONCERNED PAPERWISE ABOUT CONDITIONS AT EWR. WITH VERY LITTLE DELAY WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. THIS RWY WAS CLOSED FOR LAST 1500' (18L) AND THOUGH WE DID NOT INFRINGE ON THIS AREA THE TKOF ROLL WAS LOWER THAN I FELT COMFORTABLE WITH. AFTER TKOF I FINALLY CHECKED NUMBERS MYSELF (TOO LATE) AND SURE ENOUGH WE WERE TOO HEAVY FOR THAT RWY. THIS WAS A 'NO EXCUSE SIR' EVENT BUT SOME HUMAN FACTORS WERE: 1) RUSHED TURNAROUND, 2) LACK OF ATTN TO FICONS AT MEM, MORE CONCERNED WITH DEST AND LULLED BY GOOD, COOL WX AT MEM, 3) TOO MUCH RELIANCE ON ACCURACY OF F/O, 4) TOO MANY PERSONAL DISTRACTIONS PILED UP AS RESULT OF DISSATISFACTION WITH JOB, RECENT MERGER, MINOR PHYSICAL DISCOMFORTS, ETC. IN CONCLUSION, HAVE DECIDED I BETTER GET MY ACT TOGETHER AND PUT EVERYTHING OUT OF MIND BUT THE TASK AT HAND, OR HANG IT UP FOR GOOD.
