Narrative:

Active runway was 23, wind light, requested from ground an intersection departure from microphone on runway 5, since that was the general direction of flight. First said intersection charlie, since I was thinking of the current ATIS. This caused some initial confusion, but was clarified, and ground said that what I wanted was approved. The copilot called 'ready for takeoff on 23 at microphone.' I immediately corrected and said, 'read for takeoff on 5.' tower cleared us for takeoff and we departed on 5. On the climb out tower informed us that 23 was the active, thereby inferring we had departed the wrong runway. After a discussion on the radio about who said what, and if there had been opposing traffic, tower said there was no problem and turned us over to departure. This shows what can happen when there is communication confusion, not listening to what each other is saying. Before takeoff I should have clarified with tower exactly what I was going to do, and made sure he understood it.

Title: CONFUSION OVER RWY FOR TKOF AT BUF. INTERSECTION TKOF WITH SUFFICIENT RWY LENGTH IN BOTH DIRECTIONS.

Narrative: ACTIVE RWY WAS 23, WIND LIGHT, REQUESTED FROM GND AN INTXN DEP FROM MIKE ON RWY 5, SINCE THAT WAS THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF FLT. FIRST SAID INTXN CHARLIE, SINCE I WAS THINKING OF THE CURRENT ATIS. THIS CAUSED SOME INITIAL CONFUSION, BUT WAS CLARIFIED, AND GND SAID THAT WHAT I WANTED WAS APPROVED. THE COPLT CALLED 'READY FOR TKOF ON 23 AT MIKE.' I IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED AND SAID, 'READ FOR TKOF ON 5.' TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF AND WE DEPARTED ON 5. ON THE CLBOUT TWR INFORMED US THAT 23 WAS THE ACTIVE, THEREBY INFERRING WE HAD DEPARTED THE WRONG RWY. AFTER A DISCUSSION ON THE RADIO ABOUT WHO SAID WHAT, AND IF THERE HAD BEEN OPPOSING TFC, TWR SAID THERE WAS NO PROB AND TURNED US OVER TO DEP. THIS SHOWS WHAT CAN HAPPEN WHEN THERE IS COM CONFUSION, NOT LISTENING TO WHAT EACH OTHER IS SAYING. BEFORE TKOF I SHOULD HAVE CLARIFIED WITH TWR EXACTLY WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO, AND MADE SURE HE UNDERSTOOD IT.
