Narrative:

Noting the windsock as it showed the wind from the northwest, I monitored unicom and noted no traffic on either the radio or visually around the airport as I taxied out and performed my runup checklist. My passenger and I were wearing headsets and the radios checked ok. The wind was a right crosswind to me as I called my intentions on the unicom and taxied out onto runway 29 and departed. As of now, I had not heard any radio traffic for this airport and did not make visual contact with any aircraft either airborne or on the ground. As I rose above the tree line that was to my left, and as I approached the intersection of runways 02/29, I looked about 45 degree to my left and there was an small aircraft Y on a takeoff from runway 02 and was at my altitude, at about the same rate of climb, and about 2 to 3 seconds from imminent collision. Our impact would have been at the intersection of 02/29 at about 75' AGL. I made a hard 90 degree turn to the right with a bank angle of about 90 degree. As I rolled and turned right I saw the Y 'disappear' 'beneath' my wing as I rolled the belly of my airplane broadside to them. It is at this point they seemed about 30' from me, and I assumed they had not seen me and would continue on their normal climbout. I finally reestablished visual contact with the Y which was above me and to my right still climbing out on runway heading. Post-flight discussion with the Y occupants and as many as 4 eye-witnesses on the ground. Pilot of the Y called his intentions on unicom before departure on 02 as I did on 29 but neither of us heard the other's transmission. The Y pilot saw me too late and had I not taken radical evasive action all 4 of us involved would be dead or damaged. The collision was imminent and probably could not have been staged with greater precision. The main problem is visual obstruction that the trees create by their location between the approach ends of runways 29/33/02/06. I feel certain that this event will recur as it already has recurred and will not cease until those trees are removed.

Title: 2 SMAS TAKING OFF FROM INTERSECTING RWYS AT NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL, MET EACH OTHER AT THE INTERSECTION. ONE TOOK VIOLENT EVASIVE ACTION, MISSED BY 30'.

Narrative: NOTING THE WINDSOCK AS IT SHOWED THE WIND FROM THE NW, I MONITORED UNICOM AND NOTED NO TFC ON EITHER THE RADIO OR VISUALLY AROUND THE ARPT AS I TAXIED OUT AND PERFORMED MY RUNUP CHECKLIST. MY PAX AND I WERE WEARING HEADSETS AND THE RADIOS CHECKED OK. THE WIND WAS A RIGHT XWIND TO ME AS I CALLED MY INTENTIONS ON THE UNICOM AND TAXIED OUT ONTO RWY 29 AND DEPARTED. AS OF NOW, I HAD NOT HEARD ANY RADIO TFC FOR THIS ARPT AND DID NOT MAKE VISUAL CONTACT WITH ANY ACFT EITHER AIRBORNE OR ON THE GND. AS I ROSE ABOVE THE TREE LINE THAT WAS TO MY LEFT, AND AS I APCHED THE INTXN OF RWYS 02/29, I LOOKED ABOUT 45 DEG TO MY LEFT AND THERE WAS AN SMA Y ON A TKOF FROM RWY 02 AND WAS AT MY ALT, AT ABOUT THE SAME RATE OF CLIMB, AND ABOUT 2 TO 3 SECONDS FROM IMMINENT COLLISION. OUR IMPACT WOULD HAVE BEEN AT THE INTXN OF 02/29 AT ABOUT 75' AGL. I MADE A HARD 90 DEG TURN TO THE RIGHT WITH A BANK ANGLE OF ABOUT 90 DEG. I FINALLY REESTABLISHED VISUAL CONTACT WITH THE Y WHICH WAS ABOVE ME AND TO MY RIGHT STILL CLIMBING OUT ON RWY HDG. POST-FLT DISCUSSION WITH THE Y OCCUPANTS AND AS MANY AS 4 EYE-WITNESSES ON THE GND. PLT OF THE Y CALLED HIS INTENTIONS ON UNICOM BEFORE DEP ON 02 AS I DID ON 29 BUT NEITHER OF US HEARD THE OTHER'S XMISSION. THE Y PLT SAW ME TOO LATE AND HAD I NOT TAKEN RADICAL EVASIVE ACTION ALL 4 OF US INVOLVED WOULD BE DEAD OR DAMAGED. THE COLLISION WAS IMMINENT AND PROBABLY COULD NOT HAVE BEEN STAGED WITH GREATER PRECISION. THE MAIN PROBLEM IS VISUAL OBSTRUCTION THAT THE TREES CREATE BY THEIR LOCATION BETWEEN THE APCH ENDS OF RWYS 29/33/02/06. I FEEL CERTAIN THAT THIS EVENT WILL RECUR AS IT ALREADY HAS RECURRED AND WILL NOT CEASE UNTIL THOSE TREES ARE REMOVED.
