Narrative:
Flying for the tv news, we were requested to land at a private school for a show & tell type operation. Contact was made with the principal, local law enforcement and school staff. All persons said landing was fine with them. I was informed that was ok, since it was a private school. I have since been informed that state highway police should have been contacted prior to landing. We had ground protection for the students and landing was made at a safe distance. I understand the safety aspect for the rull, but I was under-informed as to when it was in effect. I know that another landing will not be made west/O proper prior contact, but I do not at this time want to jeopardize my pilot certificate.

Title: SMA NEWS SERVICE HELICOPTER MAKES AN OFF-ARPT LNDG WITHOUT PROPER NOTIFICATION TO STATE AND OR LCL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY.
Narrative: FLYING FOR THE TV NEWS, WE WERE REQUESTED TO LAND AT A PVT SCHOOL FOR A SHOW & TELL TYPE OPERATION. CONTACT WAS MADE WITH THE PRINCIPAL, LCL LAW ENFORCEMENT AND SCHOOL STAFF. ALL PERSONS SAID LNDG WAS FINE WITH THEM. I WAS INFORMED THAT WAS OK, SINCE IT WAS A PVT SCHOOL. I HAVE SINCE BEEN INFORMED THAT STATE HWY POLICE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONTACTED PRIOR TO LNDG. WE HAD GND PROTECTION FOR THE STUDENTS AND LNDG WAS MADE AT A SAFE DISTANCE. I UNDERSTAND THE SAFETY ASPECT FOR THE RULL, BUT I WAS UNDER-INFORMED AS TO WHEN IT WAS IN EFFECT. I KNOW THAT ANOTHER LNDG WILL NOT BE MADE W/O PROPER PRIOR CONTACT, BUT I DO NOT AT THIS TIME WANT TO JEOPARDIZE MY PLT CERTIFICATE.
