Narrative:

As flight taxied for the takeoff runway it was noted that we had a malfunction of the ARTS system (automatic reserve thrust system). Thereafter we advised the tower that we would not be ready for a few minutes. The controller instructed us to turn the corner of the parallel and the taxiway 19 to hold short of runway 17R. Taxiway 18 and 19 are paved together to form one section only distinguished by signs. Knowing that our problem would take some time to resolve I taxied as far away from other traffic as I could so as not to block access to 17R. In so doing I taxied onto taxiway 18. ATC became upset about this along with the fact that we didn't hear their xmissions nor they ours. Our transmission was finally relayed by an aircraft behind us. Dfw chief threatened to violate us because of the gap in communication and taxiing on 18 instead of 19.
