Narrative:

On a VFR ferry flight from albuquerque, NM to raleigh, nc in my just-purchased small aircraft with no transponder, I inadvertently entered the new memphis TCA. The memphis sectional I purchased that day had expired. My error was not checking the date on what I thought was a new sectional. The obsolete chart showed memphis as an arsa. Since the old genave radio seemed to have limited transmitting capabilities, although good reception in navigation and communication modes, I elected to fly at 9500' around the memphis arsa to the north, near the gilmore VOR, and continue northeast to mckellar for fuel and a WX briefing at the FSS there. Previous communication with ATC earlier in the day had proven difficult. I had to be within 15 mi for them to receive me at 9500', so I thought it would be prudent to avoid the arsa. When I landed at mckellar, I discovered the error when I folded the chart and saw the expiration date.

Title: PLT OF SMA ACFT INADVERTENTLY ENTERED MEM TCA, NEW TCA, OUTDATED CHART.

Narrative: ON A VFR FERRY FLT FROM ALBUQUERQUE, NM TO RALEIGH, NC IN MY JUST-PURCHASED SMA WITH NO XPONDER, I INADVERTENTLY ENTERED THE NEW MEMPHIS TCA. THE MEMPHIS SECTIONAL I PURCHASED THAT DAY HAD EXPIRED. MY ERROR WAS NOT CHECKING THE DATE ON WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A NEW SECTIONAL. THE OBSOLETE CHART SHOWED MEMPHIS AS AN ARSA. SINCE THE OLD GENAVE RADIO SEEMED TO HAVE LIMITED TRANSMITTING CAPABILITIES, ALTHOUGH GOOD RECEPTION IN NAV AND COM MODES, I ELECTED TO FLY AT 9500' AROUND THE MEMPHIS ARSA TO THE NORTH, NEAR THE GILMORE VOR, AND CONTINUE NE TO MCKELLAR FOR FUEL AND A WX BRIEFING AT THE FSS THERE. PREVIOUS COM WITH ATC EARLIER IN THE DAY HAD PROVEN DIFFICULT.
