Narrative:

Descending through 15000' MSL, ZID directed us to maintain 15000'. At this time the aircraft was at 14700' MSL. I disengaged the autoplt and commenced an immediate climb back to 15000' MSL. The captain acknowledged the command to level at 15000' MSL, and then stated that we had been cleared to 12000' MSL. ZID stated the clearance to descend to 12000' MSL was for another aircraft, and we were to maintain 15000' MSL. We subsequently landed at cvg and contacted the ZID supervisor on a landline. After reviewing the taped xmissions between the ZID controller and our aircraft, the supervisor states we were never cleared below 16000' MSL. There was another air carrier at 14000' MSL who had received clearance to 12000' MSL. The supervisor further stated that we had acknowledged clearance to depart FL190, but had read back 12000' MSL. The instruction to maintain 16000' MSL by the ZID controller are clear on the tape, and our readback of 12000' MSL is also clear. Neither the captain nor myself can recall ever receiving clearance to 16000' MSL. Fortunately, no conflict arose. It was a mistaken readback on our part and a controller error for not catching the wrong altitude on readback. Vigilance by PF is as important on the radios as by the PNF.

Title: FLT CREW OF MLG IN DESCENT WAS RECLEARED BY CENTER CTLR BECAUSE FLT HAD DESCENDED THROUGH THEIR ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative: DSNDING THROUGH 15000' MSL, ZID DIRECTED US TO MAINTAIN 15000'. AT THIS TIME THE ACFT WAS AT 14700' MSL. I DISENGAGED THE AUTOPLT AND COMMENCED AN IMMEDIATE CLB BACK TO 15000' MSL. THE CAPT ACKNOWLEDGED THE COMMAND TO LEVEL AT 15000' MSL, AND THEN STATED THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO 12000' MSL. ZID STATED THE CLRNC TO DSND TO 12000' MSL WAS FOR ANOTHER ACFT, AND WE WERE TO MAINTAIN 15000' MSL. WE SUBSEQUENTLY LANDED AT CVG AND CONTACTED THE ZID SUPVR ON A LANDLINE. AFTER REVIEWING THE TAPED XMISSIONS BTWN THE ZID CTLR AND OUR ACFT, THE SUPVR STATES WE WERE NEVER CLRED BELOW 16000' MSL. THERE WAS ANOTHER ACR AT 14000' MSL WHO HAD RECEIVED CLRNC TO 12000' MSL. THE SUPVR FURTHER STATED THAT WE HAD ACKNOWLEDGED CLRNC TO DEPART FL190, BUT HAD READ BACK 12000' MSL. THE INSTRUCTION TO MAINTAIN 16000' MSL BY THE ZID CTLR ARE CLEAR ON THE TAPE, AND OUR READBACK OF 12000' MSL IS ALSO CLEAR. NEITHER THE CAPT NOR MYSELF CAN RECALL EVER RECEIVING CLRNC TO 16000' MSL. FORTUNATELY, NO CONFLICT AROSE. IT WAS A MISTAKEN READBACK ON OUR PART AND A CTLR ERROR FOR NOT CATCHING THE WRONG ALT ON READBACK. VIGILANCE BY PF IS AS IMPORTANT ON THE RADIOS AS BY THE PNF.
