Narrative:

I was on approach to lga via VOR C. WX was VOR. While on downwind, approach asked commuter if he had airline B on base. Reply was affirmative, and he was instructed to maintain 2500' and follow me to airport. I was given a heading for base leg and continue to maintain 3000'. I was cleared to intercept the VOR C inbound radial. At 7-8 DME I was cleared to 2000' and cleared for the approach. I glanced to my left and observed a twin turboprop turning under me at a lower altitude, but very close. I stayed at 3000' until my first officer had visibility contact with this aircraft to the right of our aircraft. Reported this aircraft and was told he was at 2500'. Continued approach and landing. No evasive action was taken. On the ground the lga approach supervisor confirmed to me, over the phone, that the aircraft was at 2500' and was the same aircraft that was to follow me to the airport. I feel that the commuter either misidented the aircraft he was to follow or he misjudged our relative speeds in spacing himself.

Title: FLT CREW OF LGT ON APCH TO LGA HAD LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION FROM COMMUTER TYPE WHO HAD BEEN CLEARED TO FOLLOW THE LGT.

Narrative: I WAS ON APCH TO LGA VIA VOR C. WX WAS VOR. WHILE ON DOWNWIND, APCH ASKED COMMUTER IF HE HAD AIRLINE B ON BASE. REPLY WAS AFFIRMATIVE, AND HE WAS INSTRUCTED TO MAINTAIN 2500' AND FOLLOW ME TO ARPT. I WAS GIVEN A HDG FOR BASE LEG AND CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN 3000'. I WAS CLRED TO INTERCEPT THE VOR C INBND RADIAL. AT 7-8 DME I WAS CLRED TO 2000' AND CLRED FOR THE APCH. I GLANCED TO MY LEFT AND OBSERVED A TWIN TURBOPROP TURNING UNDER ME AT A LOWER ALT, BUT VERY CLOSE. I STAYED AT 3000' UNTIL MY F/O HAD VIS CONTACT WITH THIS ACFT TO THE RIGHT OF OUR ACFT. RPTED THIS ACFT AND WAS TOLD HE WAS AT 2500'. CONTINUED APCH AND LNDG. NO EVASIVE ACTION WAS TAKEN. ON THE GND THE LGA APCH SUPVR CONFIRMED TO ME, OVER THE PHONE, THAT THE ACFT WAS AT 2500' AND WAS THE SAME ACFT THAT WAS TO FOLLOW ME TO THE ARPT. I FEEL THAT THE COMMUTER EITHER MISIDENTED THE ACFT HE WAS TO FOLLOW OR HE MISJUDGED OUR RELATIVE SPDS IN SPACING HIMSELF.
