Narrative:

I was on a night flight from bpi to roosevelt, utah. Cruising at 11,500 until fbr VOR then up to 14,500' MSL to go over uinta mts. About 5 NM north of tops of uintas I lost all radios (navigation/communication, transponder, intercom). I turned off all radios let set for 10 mins. During this time I noticed the rotating beacon had quit. After a few mins the beacon came on. So I tried the radios and they came 'on'. About 5 mins later near neola intersection the radios went dead again. This posed a major problem in that all runway lights in a large area are pilot controled. When I got to roosevelt I could not get the lights on because of radio problems. I overflew the runway and made a normal approach over a refinery located off end of runway. I was able to pick up runway with landing lights and landed without further problems.

Title: PLT OF SMA SUFFERS RADIO FAILURE AT NIGHT LEAVING HIM UNABLE TO ACTIVATE PLT CONTROLLED LIGHTING AT DESTINATION AND NO ALTERNATIVE ARPTS THAT DIDN'T ALSO REQUIRE RADIOS TO ACTIVATE LIGHTS. PLT MADE LNDG WHEN HE WAS ABLE TO DISCERN RWY THROUGH USE OF LNDG LIGHT ALONE.

THIS POSED A MAJOR PROBLEM IN THAT ALL RWY LIGHTS IN A LARGE AREA ARE PLT CTLED. WHEN I GOT TO ROOSEVELT I COULD NOT GET THE LIGHTS ON BECAUSE OF RADIO PROBLEMS. I OVERFLEW THE RWY AND MADE A NORMAL APCH OVER A REFINERY LOCATED OFF END OF RWY. I WAS ABLE TO PICK UP RWY WITH LNDG LIGHTS AND LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER PROBLEMS.
