Narrative:

We were back taxiing to beginning of shortened runway 01. I was approaching the beginning of the usable runway 01 and noticed the arrows on the threshold. I proceeded into the arrowed area at a low speed (10 knots or so) until I quickly noticed that this area also had the temporary yellow chevrons put there for the change of runway configuration. It had been hard to see the chevrons in the type of lighting (daylight) we had until I was up on them. I was in the process of stopping and turning when the tower told us to stop immediately. I stopped and turned the plane around to taxi back to the beginning of the shortened runway. At that point; the tower advised us to go to normal take-off position as we were already cleared for takeoff. While we were already turned around and almost back to the take-off point; the tower advised us to watch out for the small blocks that held down the mesh chevrons. We saw them and we felt like we successfully avoided them; and did not feel anything unusual.about 10 minutes into the cruise flight approach passed on info from the tower that there had been some broken blocks found on the chevrons.due to the weird lighting; I did not see the chevrons until I was upon them. I do know that one does not taxi on chevron areas. In this case they were co-incident with the arrows; and the arrows were more visible. These were meshed temporary chevrons; and the white arrows showed up through them and; of course; in between them. In the future; I will need to be more vigilant and verbalize better what I see; so that the two of us pilots can cross-check each other.
