Narrative:

Shortly after take-off maybe within 2 minutes after I flight attendant (flight attendant) B heard a loud noise while still secured in my jumpseat during the sterile phase of flight it was a loud noise as shutter from the airplane. I immediately called flight attendant a to check if she also heard she responded with a 'yes she did' she immediately called the flight deck and I also stayed on the line to hear what captain would say. Captain immediately said 'we have an engine failure.' we are turning back to land. You have about 10 minutes; I will call back with more information.' at this point I flight attendant B heard only the 2 T's from the test information for captain as did flight attendant a - type of problem which was 'engine failure' and time remaining which was 10 minutes to prepare for landing. Flight attendant a had called me to communicate with me and brief me from that point forward we both made sure both of our galleys were secured both lavatories were locked that wi-fi was turned off lights were off. The passengers were concerned as to about the loud noise questioning? So we briefed all 75 passengers including one infant child with their parent that we would be returning back to land and to make sure that their seat backs and tray tables were up and seat belts were fastened and all smaller items were stowed completely under the seat in front of them. After that brief captain called us back to ask if we could see anything unusual looking about the right engine we looked and did not see anything. He then said he would call back. He did shortly and stated that the engine was now idle and appeared to be functioning during that time and that we would still be landing. He did not expect us to have to evacuate now that he was more sure of what was really going on. He stated that he would be informing all the passengers and did so saying that we would be returning due to engine failure and that he was not anticipating us having to evacuate in emergency mode that it would be a normal landing but we would have fire trucks awaiting us upon landing. We did our final safety compliance checks for landing and each took our jump seats as I called flight attendant a to let her know I am secured and ready for landing she also was seated and secured. Captain called back one final time letting us know we would be landing in 5 minutes and checking with us if we were ready. We said yes we are ready; passengers were all in compliance and ready. When we finally landed safely captain came on the PA and commanded 'standby; standby' which both I flight attendant B and flight attendant a followed with instructing all passengers to 'stay seated'. The fire marshall checked our right engine and we were now clear to taxi into the gate without any kind of incident everyone on board our flight was happy that we landed safely on the ground including us the crew.more information from the captain; not knowing [how critical the situation was]? Until way later where there wasn't much time left for to prepare for [the situation] due to lack of information also standard test items as fas we only received the 2 test items type of problem engine failure and time remaining...10 min in our minds we are preparing for the worst with this type of information letting lots of time pass. Overall it was a learning experience it will definitely prepare me better for next time.
