Narrative:

It was our routine morning flight to medford. We were level FL230 on a clear unlimited visibility morning. At about 58 NM from the airport, seattle center advised that we would need to descend to 9000 at that time due to conflicting IFR traffic inbound to medford. As we descended through 17,500 and were still 40 NM from the airport, I elected to cancel the IFR and stay up longer to save a little fuel. We cancelled and remained on center frequency for flight following. At about 20 NM out (north), center advised that we had traffic at 9 O'clock 5 NM, an X type aircraft descending into medford, that aircraft was on the approach control frequency of a non radar facility. We both were looking for the X and we were looking into the sun. We were unable to establish visual contact with the traffic. At about 12 NM from the airport, center advised us to contact medford tower. We called the tower and reported 5 north of the VOR (11 NM from the airport). Tower advised that there was a Y type aircraft inbound last reported north of the VOR. 'Report abeam the VOR for landing assignment.' we called abeam the VOR, tower acknowledged our call and then asked the Y its position. Y replied that they also were abeam the VOR. The tower asked them if they had us in sight. They replied with, 'they just went over us.'

Narrative: IT WAS OUR ROUTINE MORNING FLT TO MEDFORD. WE WERE LEVEL FL230 ON A CLEAR UNLIMITED VISIBILITY MORNING. AT ABOUT 58 NM FROM THE ARPT, SEATTLE CENTER ADVISED THAT WE WOULD NEED TO DSND TO 9000 AT THAT TIME DUE TO CONFLICTING IFR TFC INBND TO MEDFORD. AS WE DESCENDED THROUGH 17,500 AND WERE STILL 40 NM FROM THE ARPT, I ELECTED TO CANCEL THE IFR AND STAY UP LONGER TO SAVE A LITTLE FUEL. WE CANCELLED AND REMAINED ON CENTER FREQ FOR FLT FOLLOWING. AT ABOUT 20 NM OUT (NORTH), CENTER ADVISED THAT WE HAD TFC AT 9 O'CLOCK 5 NM, AN X TYPE ACFT DESCENDING INTO MEDFORD, THAT ACFT WAS ON THE APCH CTL FREQ OF A NON RADAR FAC. WE BOTH WERE LOOKING FOR THE X AND WE WERE LOOKING INTO THE SUN. WE WERE UNABLE TO ESTABLISH VISUAL CONTACT WITH THE TFC. AT ABOUT 12 NM FROM THE ARPT, CENTER ADVISED US TO CONTACT MEDFORD TWR. WE CALLED THE TWR AND REPORTED 5 N OF THE VOR (11 NM FROM THE ARPT). TWR ADVISED THAT THERE WAS A Y TYPE ACFT INBND LAST REPORTED N OF THE VOR. 'REPORT ABEAM THE VOR FOR LNDG ASSIGNMENT.' WE CALLED ABEAM THE VOR, TWR ACKNOWLEDGED OUR CALL AND THEN ASKED THE Y ITS POSITION. Y REPLIED THAT THEY ALSO WERE ABEAM THE VOR. THE TWR ASKED THEM IF THEY HAD US IN SIGHT. THEY REPLIED WITH, 'THEY JUST WENT OVER US.'
