Narrative:

Was 2nd observer seat relief pilot on flight. A release 2 was printed prior to our arrival at jet however I was unaware of this until crew change enroute; when notified by dispatch we needed to drop our alternate in order to redispatch. At that point I looked at messages and saw we had been given release 2 with an alternate and 4000 pounds of additional gas. No notification by dispatch on acars or by ramp telling us we had new fuel load. I believe the flying first officer assumed the new release was for a zero fuel weight increase only.

Title: B777 First Officers report not detecting that a revised release contains an alternate airport and an increase in fuel. This is not detected until the redispatch point where Dispatch deletes the alternate to allow a legal re release. The many factors involved in the omission are discussed.
