Narrative:

While flying helicopter straight and level, spotted fixed-wing aircraft (small low-wing) opposite direction, same altitude, level, approximately 500' away. Banked left 20 degree to avoid. Fixed-wing also banked left simultaneously. Came within 200-300' of each other. No further visual contact. Visibility was hampered by haze. I had landing light on as did fixed-wing. This may have assisted in avoiding collision. I was not being handled by ATC at the time of incident.
