Narrative:

Other aircraft was an small aircraft, en route at 8000' followed by an air carrier, above but landing, so had to get below. I issued a descent clearance to the air carrier thinking it would be below 7000' prior to catching up (within 5 mi) with the small aircraft. It didn't work. I issued a vector to effect separation laterally but it was too little too late.
