Narrative:

After monitoring ATIS, a taxi clearance was received and read back to ground control for taxi from the GA ramp to runway 6 at trenton-mercer co (ttn). The taxi route would cross the approach end of runway 16, however, no holding instructions had been issued. I again confirmed with my copilot that we had not been issued holding instructions and we both checked the final approach path to runway 16 as we approached the intersection. We saw no aircraft on final. However, as we were crossing the runway, and while still on the runway surface, I again glanced behind our wing line and was surprised to see the landing lights of another single-engine small aircraft on short final for runway 16. In the ensuing moments of excited radio chatter, the landing aircraft was directed to go around (on tower frequency and unheard by us) although there would have been no real danger of collision had the pilot continued his approach to landing. We were directed (we were later told) to do a 180 degree turn on the taxiway and hold short of runway 16. When we did not acknowledge those final instructions, we were directed to park our aircraft and meet tower personnel at the control tower, which we did. We were told that the ground controller, who was new at the station, had cleared us to taxi to runway 16 and not to runway 6 as we had acknowledged. He did not, however, recognize the error when we read back the taxi clearance.

Title: ACFT INADVERTENTLY COPIED THE WRONG TKOF RWY AND TAXIED ACROSS AN ACTIVE RWY AT TTN.

Narrative: AFTER MONITORING ATIS, A TAXI CLRNC WAS RECEIVED AND READ BACK TO GND CTL FOR TAXI FROM THE GA RAMP TO RWY 6 AT TRENTON-MERCER CO (TTN). THE TAXI ROUTE WOULD CROSS THE APCH END OF RWY 16, HOWEVER, NO HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS HAD BEEN ISSUED. I AGAIN CONFIRMED WITH MY COPLT THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN ISSUED HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS AND WE BOTH CHECKED THE FINAL APCH PATH TO RWY 16 AS WE APCHED THE INTXN. WE SAW NO ACFT ON FINAL. HOWEVER, AS WE WERE XING THE RWY, AND WHILE STILL ON THE RWY SURFACE, I AGAIN GLANCED BEHIND OUR WING LINE AND WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THE LNDG LIGHTS OF ANOTHER SINGLE-ENGINE SMA ON SHORT FINAL FOR RWY 16. IN THE ENSUING MOMENTS OF EXCITED RADIO CHATTER, THE LNDG ACFT WAS DIRECTED TO GO AROUND (ON TWR FREQ AND UNHEARD BY US) ALTHOUGH THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN NO REAL DANGER OF COLLISION HAD THE PLT CONTINUED HIS APCH TO LNDG. WE WERE DIRECTED (WE WERE LATER TOLD) TO DO A 180 DEG TURN ON THE TXWY AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 16. WHEN WE DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THOSE FINAL INSTRUCTIONS, WE WERE DIRECTED TO PARK OUR ACFT AND MEET TWR PERSONNEL AT THE CTL TWR, WHICH WE DID. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE GND CTLR, WHO WAS NEW AT THE STATION, HAD CLRED US TO TAXI TO RWY 16 AND NOT TO RWY 6 AS WE HAD ACKNOWLEDGED. HE DID NOT, HOWEVER, RECOGNIZE THE ERROR WHEN WE READ BACK THE TAXI CLRNC.
