Narrative:

I left watsonville airport at XX32 for columbia. I was going to check the functioning and accuracy of my LORAN C. I intended to do some meandering over the san joaquin valley. I did not file a VFR plan or use radar following. Not using the LORAN yet, I proceeded by pilotage to loop south of the gilroy intersection and gilroy (south county) airport to avoid the sjc arsa. Just prior to the incident I noted neither gear light (up-down) was on. Also announced on 122.8 was parachute activity near hollister airport. Knowing I was crossing V485, I was dividing my scan: aircraft in vicinity, ground reference, hollister aircraft and jumpers, and recycle gear. I noted motion to my left and saw a commuter light transport Y pass the rear of my plane. It did not appear to have taken evasive action. I doubt he saw me; he was descending, I was climbing.
