Narrative:

Gander ATC cleared us to, 'atlanta from hopedale (ho),north american route 274.' wbound common north american 274HOPEDALE direct bagotville. Company had filed a route not consistent with the non common portion after ottawa (yow). Non common after yow if J546 vkg, J558 yxu, etc. We entered company field flight plan in FMS/INS navigation system as filed by company. At yow we started to navigation toward buf VOR instead of J546 toward amert intersection and then kleinberg VOR. Canadian ATC called on VHF and pointed out the discrepancy. We immediately turned toward vkg (kleinberg) VOR and were advised to contact the next controller. A brief discussion was held with controller prior to switching over to the new controller re: non common routes. The confusion in this matter stems from the flight plan as filed by the company and the fact that it was not the same as the 'non common' portion after yow of the route ATC expected us to fly. Deviation from non common route was no more than 10 mi heading outbnd yow VOR to amert intersection along J546 should have been 256 degrees. We flew outbnd yow to buf direct heading of 231 degrees, a 25 degree steering error.
