Narrative:
I departed iah airport via the BNDT1 departure. Before I took off I reviewed the SID verbally with my first officer while I checked the FMS to make sure we had all restrictions listed. It shows scamm intersection at or above 5;000 ft on the SID and my FMS showed the same thing. When we arrived at scamm at 5;000 ft we were questioned about the altitude.we were informed we should have leveled at 4;000 ft. When we looked again we finally noticed the 4;000 ft restriction in normal lettering in the routing box under the initial departure headings and altitudes depending on your departing runway. The pictorial display of the SID shows 5;000 ft in bold and is boxed. It is listed again in the box for our assigned runway for departure; which was 15L. I saw this number in my FMS; since it is an RNAV departure. Since I saw this number basically 3 times that it what I defaulted to for my altitude. Next time we will both look at the SID separately as well as the FMS; then review our findings in the future.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: After departing on the IAH BNDT1 RNAV; a corporate Captain climbed to 5;000 FT because the chart design listed 5;000 FT in bold distracting from the ROUTING verbiage; 'MAINTAIN 4;000;' with its minimized font and distance location.
