Narrative:

A student and I were cleared for takeoff with a plane on final. The plane had to go around. Prior to the clearance, I had tried to get the student to position the plane at a 45 degree angle to the approach end, but had been unable to maneuver the plane due to the proximity of the hold position marking. Therefore, unable to check final thoroughly, we took the active on the tower's clearance. We heard the plane on final say, 'where'd he come from?', and then we watched him fly overhead.
