Narrative:

Crossed runway 28 and onto runway 23L without clearance onto 23L. I misunderstood ground controller. I thought he said cross 28 and take 23L. We were about half way out on 23L when tower informed us we did not have clearance onto 23L. We exited runway 23L at nearby parallel taxiway, no conflicting traffic. We apologized and the controller indicated no problem. First officer was on company frequency obtaining weight and balance information and did not copy controller instructions. 28 and 23L are 1 piece of cement at this location. Maybe clearance language should be to hold short of 28 until cleared onto 23L.
