Narrative:

After clearing runway 29; we were instructed to cross the concrete block; taxi on yankee; hold short of uniform. After we crossed the concrete block; we both misinterpreted the taxiway yankee sign and ended up on taxiway alpha. I am always frustrated by the newark taxiway signs; which seem to be placed in non-standard locations relative to the taxiways. Next time; unless we are 100% sure of the taxiway; we will ask ground for more clarification before moving. Have we ever asked for a review of the newark taxiway sign placements? There must be taxi errors here all the time.
