Narrative:

Our destination was runway 27 localizer. San center had kept us high despite a request for lower. A timely descent was initiated when received but we were still high. At 20 mi out my suggestion to request a '360' was ignored. Then approach asked us if we were going to be able to get down in time. Closer in I suggested a request for s-turns which was accepted by the captain and approved by approach. We were still too high and informed the tower. We were unable to complete the approach. Instead of following the missed approach procedure we continued in a 90 degree turn to the right (our last s-turn direction). Clearance was given to turn left to 270 degree (missed approach procedure) and climb. Despite reading back the clearance and confirming the flight director was commanding the left turn it was not accomplished until the 3RD request by tower. Factors: in cruise I was mentally preparing for an upcoming 6 month check instead of preparing for the descent and approach. The approach brief didn't cover the missed approach procedure (lulled by excellent WX). The crew was not familiar with aircraft missed approach procedure to the point where they were comfortably followed. I was not totally familiar with the descent capabilities of the aircraft otherwise I would have been more positive with my suggestions. Corrections: planning ahead and admitting early that there was a problem would have averted a stressful and confused last second decision. Assisting the captain more with the missed approach and aircraft procedures.

Title: NON ADHERENCE TO PUBLISHED MISSED APCH PROC EVEN AFTER RECEIVING SPECIFIC CLRNC FROM ATC.

Narrative: OUR DEST WAS RWY 27 LOC. SAN CENTER HAD KEPT US HIGH DESPITE A REQUEST FOR LOWER. A TIMELY DSCNT WAS INITIATED WHEN RECEIVED BUT WE WERE STILL HIGH. AT 20 MI OUT MY SUGGESTION TO REQUEST A '360' WAS IGNORED. THEN APCH ASKED US IF WE WERE GOING TO BE ABLE TO GET DOWN IN TIME. CLOSER IN I SUGGESTED A REQUEST FOR S-TURNS WHICH WAS ACCEPTED BY THE CAPT AND APPROVED BY APCH. WE WERE STILL TOO HIGH AND INFORMED THE TWR. WE WERE UNABLE TO COMPLETE THE APCH. INSTEAD OF FOLLOWING THE MISSED APCH PROC WE CONTINUED IN A 90 DEG TURN TO THE RIGHT (OUR LAST S-TURN DIRECTION). CLRNC WAS GIVEN TO TURN LEFT TO 270 DEG (MISSED APCH PROC) AND CLIMB. DESPITE READING BACK THE CLRNC AND CONFIRMING THE FLT DIRECTOR WAS COMMANDING THE LEFT TURN IT WAS NOT ACCOMPLISHED UNTIL THE 3RD REQUEST BY TWR. FACTORS: IN CRUISE I WAS MENTALLY PREPARING FOR AN UPCOMING 6 MONTH CHECK INSTEAD OF PREPARING FOR THE DSCNT AND APCH. THE APCH BRIEF DIDN'T COVER THE MISSED APCH PROC (LULLED BY EXCELLENT WX). THE CREW WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH ACFT MISSED APCH PROC TO THE POINT WHERE THEY WERE COMFORTABLY FOLLOWED. I WAS NOT TOTALLY FAMILIAR WITH THE DSCNT CAPABILITIES OF THE ACFT OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE POSITIVE WITH MY SUGGESTIONS. CORRECTIONS: PLANNING AHEAD AND ADMITTING EARLY THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WOULD HAVE AVERTED A STRESSFUL AND CONFUSED LAST SECOND DECISION. ASSISTING THE CAPT MORE WITH THE MISSED APCH AND ACFT PROCS.
