Narrative:

On initial check-in with ground control at msp we were advised 'cleared to runway 11R, hold short of 4/12'. Copilot acknowledged taxi instructions including hold short. Upon reaching 4/22 crossing we were cleared to 'follow an air carrier Y medium large transport to 11R'. Air carrier Y was then 'cleared to cross 4/22'. Air carrier Y confirmed 'cleared to cross 4/22?' and ground replied 'cleared to cross 4/22. We understood our clearance to 'follow air carrier Y' as a new clearance to 11R. The ground controller indicated that he intended our clearance to follow air carrier Y medium large transport as a sequenced clearance only, and that we were expected to hold short of 4/22. We crossed 4/22 behind air carrier Y as cleared. No traffic conflict occurred.
