Narrative:

Chain of events: after 4 touch and goes, offered to let right seat pilot fly a circuit and he accepted. Takeoff and traffic pattern to runway 26R were normal. Stabilized approach at recommended speed of 70 KTS. Straight-in final for greater than 1/4 mi, no flaps. Crossed runway threshold at normal height, on centerline, and low power. High sink rate runway contact (hard landing) produced a noticeable squashing of the main gear. Attempted to fly out of bounce to landing, no power added. Aircraft attained nose high attitude, stall warning horn sounded, aircraft descended and pitched down striking runway in nose-low attitude with wings level. Nose gear collapsed and propeller struck runway, aircraft rolled straight ahead. Informed tower, shut down switches, evacuated aircraft to inspect damage (nose gear bent backward, propeller blade tips bent backward, transponder antenna on belly broken off). Aircraft towed by tug to hangar, FBO inspection indicated damage classified in 'incident' category. Human performance considerations: factor: control response rate differences between aircraft cause control difficulty. Perception: did not appear we were out of control until just before second contact. Judgement: failure to maintain adequate flying speed for control and to judge direction of movement from altitude. Inaction: pilot did not promptly apply full power. Very difficult to judge that an experienced pilot was having problem and to resume control in time to effect a normal controled recovery.
