Narrative:

I was flying from sacramento direct bakersfield for a fuel stop, thence to fullerton via burbank and el monte. I was navigating along V-186 out of van nuys VOR by DME distance. I measured distances off my terminal chart with a sectional scale ruler and failed to divide those distances by 2. I had planned a descent out of burbank to 2500' over el monte and was going to locate el monte by DME distance. At el monte I planned to turn south towards fullerton and proceed under the TCA. Due to my scaling error of the map I initially mistook chino for el monte but decided after a few seconds chino wasn't el monte so I quickly triangulated myself off 2 vors and realized I was in chino's air traffic area and the ontario arsa. I turned south to get out of both then headed west to fullerton. The main cause of this incident was my not using due care in measuring distances off the chart.

Narrative: I WAS FLYING FROM SACRAMENTO DIRECT BAKERSFIELD FOR A FUEL STOP, THENCE TO FULLERTON VIA BURBANK AND EL MONTE. I WAS NAVIGATING ALONG V-186 OUT OF VAN NUYS VOR BY DME DISTANCE. I MEASURED DISTANCES OFF MY TERMINAL CHART WITH A SECTIONAL SCALE RULER AND FAILED TO DIVIDE THOSE DISTANCES BY 2. I HAD PLANNED A DSCNT OUT OF BURBANK TO 2500' OVER EL MONTE AND WAS GOING TO LOCATE EL MONTE BY DME DISTANCE. AT EL MONTE I PLANNED TO TURN S TOWARDS FULLERTON AND PROCEED UNDER THE TCA. DUE TO MY SCALING ERROR OF THE MAP I INITIALLY MISTOOK CHINO FOR EL MONTE BUT DECIDED AFTER A FEW SECONDS CHINO WASN'T EL MONTE SO I QUICKLY TRIANGULATED MYSELF OFF 2 VORS AND REALIZED I WAS IN CHINO'S ATA AND THE ONTARIO ARSA. I TURNED S TO GET OUT OF BOTH THEN HEADED W TO FULLERTON. THE MAIN CAUSE OF THIS INCIDENT WAS MY NOT USING DUE CARE IN MEASURING DISTANCES OFF THE CHART.
