Narrative:

Flight instructor and student were in touch and go pattern left traffic. Controller stated extend downwind. We were extending downwind. #2 aircraft entered pattern right traffic. Controller told small aircraft they were #2 following us and gave the small aircraft a position report that we were on left base. We took that to be our que to turn base. When we turned base, the controller's supervisor came on and told us that our last instructions were to extend downwind and that he would call base. We corrected and asked for a full stop and called the control tower.
