Narrative:

At cruise FL340 on ETOPS flight; left generator control off light illuminated. As per QRH; started APU and disconnected left engine generator. Established phone patch with dispatch and maintenance. Was advised we were good to continue. About 30 minutes later; APU fault light illuminated and APU shutdown. As per QRH APU was inoperative and we declared an emergency and requested a clearance from ATC to divert. Got another phone patch with dispatch advising them of our situation and returned. Landing was uneventful.

Title: B757 Captain experiences a generator failure enroute and the APU is started to take its place. Thirty minutes later the APU shuts down and an emergency is declared. Flight returns to departure airport.
