Narrative:

Upon takeoff we got an EICAS message; pitch trim main; fail. As the non flying pilot I finished the after takeoff checklist which I was in the middle of doing and reached for the QRH. I then followed the instructions while communicating with ATC about the situation. The first officer notified me that there was a nose pitch up tendency and it was hard to control. After following all the procedures I declared an emergency and headed back. We landed without further incident and were escorted to the gate by the fire trucks. Continue to look over emergency situations. Company can make sure all items are fixed properly if it had a history over recent days.
