Narrative:

Inadvertent violation of far 121.445 (special airports) about 1 1/2 yrs ago. Although I had studied the approach charts for san, I didn't know it was considered a special airport and thus did not use any FAA approved study for the airport. WX was clear--descent from en route altitude in VMC, so can probably justify the landing--but I did not expect good WX from the forecast (just IFR minimum) since I was unaware of the airport status. No point in getting a proof of mailing since it was so long ago. My purpose in writing is to see if you could influence the FAA to have them make the list of special airports more accessible.I would suggest an addendum to far 121.445 (another paragraph) listing all of the special airports that require the training, and also a notation on the approach charts. The only way I found that san was a special airport was from an article in alpa magazine. Granted we do have a list of the special airports in the chief pilot's office; the office was closed for xmas.

Title: FLT CREW DEVIATES FROM PROVISIONS OF FEDERAL AVIATION REG 121 PT 445 REGARDING SPECIAL USE ARPTS.

Narrative: INADVERTENT VIOLATION OF FAR 121.445 (SPECIAL ARPTS) ABOUT 1 1/2 YRS AGO. ALTHOUGH I HAD STUDIED THE APCH CHARTS FOR SAN, I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS CONSIDERED A SPECIAL ARPT AND THUS DID NOT USE ANY FAA APPROVED STUDY FOR THE ARPT. WX WAS CLR--DSCNT FROM ENRTE ALT IN VMC, SO CAN PROBABLY JUSTIFY THE LNDG--BUT I DID NOT EXPECT GOOD WX FROM THE FORECAST (JUST IFR MINIMUM) SINCE I WAS UNAWARE OF THE ARPT STATUS. NO POINT IN GETTING A PROOF OF MAILING SINCE IT WAS SO LONG AGO. MY PURPOSE IN WRITING IS TO SEE IF YOU COULD INFLUENCE THE FAA TO HAVE THEM MAKE THE LIST OF SPECIAL ARPTS MORE ACCESSIBLE.I WOULD SUGGEST AN ADDENDUM TO FAR 121.445 (ANOTHER PARAGRAPH) LISTING ALL OF THE SPECIAL ARPTS THAT REQUIRE THE TRNING, AND ALSO A NOTATION ON THE APCH CHARTS. THE ONLY WAY I FOUND THAT SAN WAS A SPECIAL ARPT WAS FROM AN ARTICLE IN ALPA MAGAZINE. GRANTED WE DO HAVE A LIST OF THE SPECIAL ARPTS IN THE CHIEF PLT'S OFFICE; THE OFFICE WAS CLOSED FOR XMAS.
