Narrative:

While descending from 7000' to 6000' while on radar vectors from ny approach control for an approach to ewr runway 22L, I glanced out the left window and saw a light single engine aircraft pass below and behind me (from my 1 O'clock to 7 O'clock position). Almost simultaneously, approach control called 'traffic 12 O'clock less than a mi, altitude unk'. We never saw him till he was passing us and I don't believe he ever saw us. Our altitude was approximately 6700' descending and I would guess him to have been 6500'.
