Narrative:

Following departure from phl on an large transport aircraft, the first officer and I thought ZNY had cleared us to climb to 11000'. The first officer's readback to center was for us to climb to 11000'. At approximately 10600' center asked us to confirm our clearance to 10000'. We told him of our understanding and requested the altitude he would like us to maintain. He indicated 10000' and we descended to that altitude. He also indicated that there was 'no conflict' and everything was 'ok.' we do not remember the frequency, but it was the first contact with ZNY following departure control (toward ptw). Misunderstood the controller and evidently the same with him during readback.
